Tye Harris
co-owner + artist
If black and grey realism and portraits are your thing, then Tye’s got you covered! Tattooing an impressive two decades and co-owner of Faces in the Dark alongside his wife, Becca, since 2016, rest assured, you’ll be in good hands working with Tye.
During his career, he’s won countless awards, judged numerous tattoo competitions at tattoo conventions, taught seminars, and done dozens of guest spots all over the world. His attention to detail, bold designs, and dark shading is what makes his work truly distinct.
He was homeschooled most of his childhood, as he grew into a teenager, music became a big escape. When he noticed all the musicians and bands he was into had tattoos, it piqued his interest. First growing up in Odessa, before moving with family to rural south Texas and spending much of his childhood at home alone, he graduated early from his homeschool program and at first wasn’t sure what he wanted to do with his life.
Having never taking an art class, but tired of menial jobs- Tye bought a tattoo machine at 18 got his start teaching himself. He began by tattooing himself and friends, in more than questionable & seedy environments, more often than not at first.
But, fires often start with a single ember, and- portfolio full of printed out pictures in hand- that was the push he needed to seek out shops, and go from shop to shop in San Antonio in the early 2000’s, desperate for an opportunity to work amongst real artists in a real shop. Finally given a chance in an actual studio, he was determined not to squander it.
Tye absorbed as much as he could- especially early in his career, before finding he really enjoyed bringing loved ones to life on skin, and found it came easier to him than most. It wasn’t long before Tye was traveling constantly to shops and conventions, often in different areas of Europe, Hawaii, the Caribbean, as well as the U.S.
He’s tattooed celebrities like Zoe and Lenny Kravitz, Skylar Grey, and Derrick Williams, to list a few notable clients.
Since founding Faces in the Dark in 2016 with his wife, Becca, life has slowed down a lot, but he still loves traveling and looking forward to the next adventure. Along with that, he’s a huge movie buff and enjoys gaming as well as- last but not least- being a cat dad to his “girls” Church and Maeve (which he’d argue is his most important role yet!)
